Cholesterol is a type of fat used by the body for important everyday functions such as hormone synthesis and tissue repair. Cholesterol comes from dietary sources, but the majority of daily requirement is synthesised by the liver. The rate controlling enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis is 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase.
