NSW Health recently announced a state-wide pilot where appropriately trained pharmacists in community pharmacies will be able to provide treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTI) in women aged from 18 to 65 years (inclusive) as part of a clinical trial commencing in April 2023.

To support this advancement in community pharmacist’s scope of practice and women’s health, the Australasian College of Pharmacy (College) is offering New South Wales community pharmacists free accredited training for uncomplicated cystitis treatment.

College President, Ms Michelle Bou-Samra, recognises the success of the Urinary Tract Infection Pharmacy Pilot – Queensland and commends NSW Health for the announcement of the state wide pilot.

“The Queensland Pilot was a success and resulted in UTI treatment as a permanent pharmacy service.”

“It is encouraging to see other states follow suit with a greater range of primary healthcare services available to patients through their local community pharmacy.”

“The College’s uncomplicated cystitis treatment course fulfils the training requirements for NSW Health’s state-wide pilot.

As the leading education provider for the pharmacy industry, our aim is to ensure NSW community pharmacists have access to the latest information.”

“We hope that the provision of UTI services by community pharmacies continues to expand across Australia, as it is a clear example that pharmacists can and should provide more primary healthcare services for patients.” “As community pharmacists move towards practising to their full scope, the College will be at the forefront of the education and training required for them to competently provide more primary healthcare services for patients.”
