International Arthritis Review Confirms Natural Therapy Benefits for Pain Relief
An international research review has revealed that chondroitin sulfate may help to reduce pain for arthritis sufferers.
The 2015 Cochrane review of international research trials found chondroitin, alone or in combination with glucosamine, was better than placebo in improving pain in people with mild osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis affects more than 1.8 million people in Australia and costs the country more than $2.03 billion every year.
Osteoarthritis is a disease of the joints where the joint loses cartilage, the bone grows to try to repair the damage, but this bone growth may make the situation worse. This can make the joint painful and unstable, which can affect physical function or ability to use the joint.
BioCeuticals Education Manager Belinda Reynolds said chondroitin works by helping to slow down the degradation of cartilage and restoring lost cartilage. It also contains amino acids which are essential building blocks for cartilage molecules in the human body.
Ms Reynolds said the extensive Cochrane review examined 43 studies on chondroitin involving 9,110 people.
“It showed that chondroitin reduces knee pain by 20 per cent and slows down the narrowing of joint space width on X-rays of the affected joint,” Ms Reynolds said.
“People who took chondroitin also had pain scores 10 per cent lower than those who took a placebo.
“Those who took chondroitin rated their pain at 18 on a 0 to 100 scale after 6 months while those who took a placebo rated their pain at 28 out of 100.
Ms Reynolds said it was important to take the most effective form of chondroitin supplements at the right dosage.
“New to the Australian market is a form of chondroitin called Bioiberica’s BioActive® chondroitin sulfate which was used as the basis for the USP monograph on chondroitin, a testament to its purity and quality profile,” she said.
“It is the most well researched chondroitin sulfate on the market and is available in supplements prescribed by health practitioners.”
“For example, BioCeuticals new Chondroitin BioActive is a unique combination of Bioiberica’s CS BioActive® chondroitin sulfate and Boswellia serrata standardised to 30% acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA). With a therapeutic one-a-day dose, Chondroitin BioActive provides 800mg of chondroitin.
“Chondroitin BioActive is a professionally prescribed supplement that has sound scientific evidence and may help in slowing the progression of mild osteoarthritis of the knee, and provide temporary relief of symptoms including joint swelling, pain and reduced mobility,” Ms Reynolds said.
“This combination may help to slow the progression of cartilage wear and joint space narrowing, relieve pain and symptoms associated with mild osteoarthritis and temporarily relieve swollen, aching joints and joint inflammation associated with mild arthritis.”
