We are in this together!
The 2023 Melbourne Memory Walk & Jog is just a few weeks away with the event taking place on Sunday 7 May, at Princes Park, Carlton North.
Get in quickly to guarantee your spot at Memory Walk & Jog, a family-friendly event. Walk or jog with us and raise much-needed funds and awareness for people impacted by dementia.
Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe AM is delighted to welcome participants to the flagship fundraising event.
“Memory Walk & Jog is Dementia Australia’s largest fundraising initiative and raises much-needed funds to provide invaluable support, education and resources for people living with dementia, their families and carers,” Ms. McCabe said.
“It’s estimated that 65 percent of people living with dementia live in the community. This could be a family member, a friend or a neighbour. It could be anyone in our community. By walking, jogging, or running, raising money and awareness, you will help the countless families impacted by dementia in Melbourne and across Australia.”
Melbourne local, Isabelle will be walking with her brother, Sam. Their mother Christine was diagnosed with younger onset dementia at just 54 and has sadly died of Alzheimer’s disease.
“I’m always overwhelmed by the sense of community as I’m running around the track. I find it so heartwarming to be surrounded by a whole community who have all been touched by the same condition and feel that sense of enthusiasm and sense of purpose, that we can all make a difference. I’m often surprised about who amongst your friends and community is touched by dementia, particularly when you’re seeking donations. People will come forward with their own stories. Memory Walk & jog is a lovely way to connect with people, in an often unexpected way,” Isabelle said.
Why walk for dementia?
There are more than 400,000 people of all ages living with some form of dementia in Australia. Without a medical breakthrough, the number of people living with dementia is expected to almost double in 30 years. Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia and the leading cause of death for women.
